ROMming Elsewhere: International Edition

Out of all of the ‘ROMming elsewhere’ videos I’ve found, this one has to be one of the most entertaining. After all, where else can you hear ‘Eye of the Tiger’ and see folks getting exhausted on four-minute workouts in DUTCH?

ROMming Elsewhere: Lower-Body Instruction

Here is a quite helpful Range of Motion instructional video for lower body workouts; it explains proper form, pace, and common pitfalls. If you’ve ever wanted a more technical explanation of what I’m doing, here it is!

ROM by the Numbers: Jubilee Lifts

IMG_1491Imagine having a little girl who very much likes to ‘fly’ by jumping on her daddies shins and being propelled into the air.

WHEEE!

Back in the day, pre-ROM, I could do maybe three or four of these before my abs felt like they were going to rip out of my torso. It’s basically like doing crunches with a little person attached to you. But now, six months in, guess how many I can do comfortably?

21.

And she’s only getting heavier, folks. : ) IMG_1492

ROMming Elsewhere: Upper-Body Instruction

I found this really solid Range of Motion instructional video for upper body workouts; it explains proper form, pace, and common pitfalls. If you’ve ever wanted a more technical explanation of what I’m doing, here it is!

So My Neighbor Breaks Into My Garage…

garage_openShocking, I know. He’s someone I’ve known and trusted for years, since college. But sometimes, at 7 in the morning (whenever I’m up that early), I hear a sound in my garage. By the time I check, I usually see a car whizzing around the cul-de-sac. For you see, my neighbor has been breaking into my garage every morning for months.

Now it helps that he has a key – very clever of him. And it also helps that he doesn’t take anything – except for some time and usage of my ROM. I asked my regular intruder what this surreptitious experience has been like for him thus far – here’s what he’s got to say for himself:

I am an insurance agent and my days are busy most every day until it’s dark. I find it hard to get out and get a run in or go workout. I was looking for something to start my day, but without having to pay a gym fee and get up at 5am since I am not really a morning person. Mike had mentioned trying this range of motion thing and I was not sure it would work but I wanted to try. He said if I worked out for four minutes, I would become more toned and loss weight. So I started using the Rom after the first of the year and at that time I weighed close 180 lbs. I also started a “no sweets diet” for about a month and a half. After the diet and using the ROM almost every weekday and playing ultimate frisbee on the weekends I was down to 170 by April 20! Currently I am back to eating fairly normal, which for me is a lot, and I have maintained weight at 170. My next goal is to see if I can drop another five pounds by the end of July. If nothing else the ROM has been a great way to start my day!

Not a morning person and yet in my garage around 6 or 7 every morning? You could’ve fooled me, neighbor.

ROMming Elsewhere: ROM as Chiropractic Rehabilitation

Now here’s a match made in heaven! A Range-of-Motion Quickgym in a chiropractor’s office. This video shows how chiropractors can make their practices more helpful (and profitible) by incorporating whole-health fitness.

ROM by the Numbers: Benchmarking, May 2009

http://www.paragonbpm.com/Assets/Picture/Financial-Management-Bench-Mark-Study-15623.jpgI’ve been losing weight and building muscle this year on the ROM; this we know.  But what about stamina, strength, and endurance? These are all important barometers of overall vitality. Earlier this year I did some benchmarking to measure these areas:

  1. Step test to measure aerobic endurance
  2. Push ups to test upper body strength
  3. Sit ups to test abdominal or trunk strength
  4. Squats to measure lower body strength

Here’s how I did in February:

  • Step test – 120 beats per minute in the minute (Ugh – Poor)
  • 21 push-ups ’till maxing out (’Average’ for men)
  • 31 sit-ups in a minute (Average)
  • 41 squats ’till maxing out (’Good’)

So I did these tests again – here’s how I’m doing now:

  • Step test – 106 beats per minute in the minute (‘Below average’ – but better than ‘Poor’!)
  • 33 push-ups ’till maxing out (Still ‘Average,’ but higher)
  • 39 sit-ups in a minute (Above average!)
  • 48 squats ’till maxing out (’Good’)

So there we have it: in four minutes a day across a few months, I already have improvement across the board in heartrate and stamina. Who knows, perhaps by the end of this year I’ll be able to submit one of these?

ROM: Ohh Yeah!

Welcome to my wildest ROM video yet. Really, I’m stepping up my game here – trying to bring some of the zaniness and energy into my videos that the ROM itself gives. I’m slowly becoming better at some of the technical aspects of video production, and hopefully the better sound quality will show in this vid.

http://zoecarnate.files.wordpress.com/2009/05/atlas.jpg?w=217I promised last week to have updates of bench-marking, body fat analysis, etc…but then my family & I got some kind of flu. (Zombie swine flu, perhaps? Well, I’m not undead yet…) So, in light of my renewed blogging vows, you’ll see this coming next week – and far more consistently after that. I want to emphasize that the ROM has revolutionized my fitness, forever as far as I’m concerned since it’s so…freakin’…easy. I don’t have a Charles Atlas body yet, but I’m steadily getting there. If you’re tuning in today for the first time (or the first time in awhile), you can see my whole-health journey-to-date here.

The music this time around is just breathtaking; it’s from Aaron Strumpel‘s hot new album Elephants, which reminds me of Joseph Arthur meets Wovenhand/16 Horsepower – the most ecstatically awesome mashup I can imagine at the moment. And for a limited time, those joining the uber-creative Love Is Concrete artists’ circle are getting a free download of the full album, courtesy of Aaron’s generosity & that of his producer, Todd Fadel of Agents of Future notoriety. Love Is Concrete is also 100% free so check it out & feel the love! ElephantManFINAL

A question for my techie friends: Do you have any idea how to view YouTube’s AudioSwap playlist without being in edit mode? I want to browse their database of pre-approved music to avoid the Cher muting snafu I suffered a coupla months back, but I want to see their offerings enough in advance that I can do themed recordings. Lemme know if you have any insights…

ROMming Elsewhere: Training Video

Here’s an inspiring vid of a ROM upper-body workout at a training center in New Jersey. My chest form is slightly different; I wonder which is best?
